I did the same thing to my silver contour. I took off the reflector, which is very easy to do. just open the trunk and unscrew the reflector from there. then disconnect any wires that may be connected. next you either tape it off and paint it yourself, or take it to a body shop and have them do it for you (i recommend taking it in). If you have a friend that works in a body shop, it would be a big plus.
