i was looking through the Duratec Maintenance post at the top and it says to change you fuel filter every 30 k. Does this really need to be changed every 30k?

It never needs to be changed as long as you never get any fuel contamination. When it does get plugged up, even little enough that you may not notice it when driving, it makes the fuel pump work harder.

Replacing the fuel filter every 30,000 miles is fuel pump insurance.

just be very, very careful with those plastic fuel line connectors. (see my post in the main index!)

I just did mine last night. Broke the little white pieces but the new filter came with replacements. My problem was getting the clamp off and back on. Rusted almost solid. I almost thought for a second to get the torch to heat it up and loosen it off.

I didn't have to jack teh car up at all. It may have been a little easier but it is in quite the open spot to get at.

Idles, and runs smoother now. Still have an annoying intermittant CEL that pops up and goes away with no codes recorded to retrieve.

For the rusted clamps, you may want to consider using plastic zip ties sold at hardware store (I learnt that trick from Ford). As for the intermittent code, scan it when the CEL pops up. And sometimes even when the CEL is not on, it is recorded as an intermittent code. Good luck.

I carry my scanner with me now all the time but wouldn't you know it the darn thing pops a code when I'm on the highway. If it ever does it and I can get over and hood up fast enough I'll try to grab it.

I'm thinking it may also be a wiring fault of some freaky sort.

I wonder if you might have a bad Fuse No. 11 (Keep Alive Memory) or fuse holder for Fuse No. 11. Each time you get a CEL, it lights and then you lose the CEL because the KAM fuse is disconnected for a while. (although, it could be a wiring fault too).
