Yeah maybe someone can answe me this... Why is it that you cant find 1900X1200 in a 19" Desktop LCD Screen (Usually only 20" and above have this resolution) but a 17" Laptop screen can run 1920x1200? Why dont they just make desktop screens out of laptop models ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/idea.gif) I would pay for a 1900X1200 17"... I'm currently running 1280X1024 on a 17" which is the max i've ever seen a 17" desktop monitor...

The Laptop screens that can do that high of a resolution are WUXGA. Lookup the price on a replacement screen for said laptop and you'll quickly see why they aren't flooding the market with desktop versions.

Like i said, I'd pay whatever amount to get that kind of resolution from a 17". But noone makes any...

I would imagine that there would be one, but LCD's are manufactured pretty much to standard pixel sizes. They are based on the average resolution for the size. You would have to find something special to get a different size.
Kind of like the old days with CRT's when MultiSync's were what everyone wanted for the huge displays

Don't forget the resolution listed is the optimum. You can go bigger. My 19" optimum is 1280x1024 yet I can display up to 1920x1440 if I don't mind scroll-screening.

Yeah, I like my WUXGA 1440x900 17" laptop. I'm sure the "shiny" Truelife 1900x1200 look better, but I'm fine with mine.
If you want a nice 20" widescreen, the Apple Cinema Display ($799) and Dell 2005FPW ($639) both use the same LCD panel. Check it out here. Their optimum resolution is 1680x1050. Apple claims 16ms; Dell claims 12ms. Anandtech says they use different backlights, so they both may be correct.
If you want bigger, HP and Apple both have 23" LCDs with high resolutions (the HP L2335 23" ($1399) uses native 1920x1200 read about it here...)
Apparantly Dell's 23" LCD sucks, but I haven't read into it much.

When buying a new LCD it's best to go and physically see it at a shop, and test out some applications on it. The specs change quite a bit, and when comparing two sets of similar specs you may easily end up with LCD's that perform extremely differently! Buying blind can be quite a distraught process if you get it wrong.
On a side note ... look for the screens that swivel. They the dogs do-what's when it comes to web-surfing!!

My problem w/ 20"+ LCD's (4:3 or 16:9) is they cost $400-600 when a decent 19" 1280 is only $240. I guess I'd rather have dual 17" 1280 LCD's for $350 than a single 1600 20" LCD. The price jump from 19->20" is huge, like double compared to 17"-19" for $175->$250. Gimmie 19" 1600x1200 (no thank you on the 16:9) for $350.
The market must not support it as there are too many people with burred vision from their CRT's?
Re: laptop screens. My Dell 600m 14.1" screen w/ 1400x1050 cost $742. Half that cost was not the screen. Replacement laptop LCD's are expensive because the market is small based on 1 million different LCD/housing combo's. People just buy a whole new laptops.

I have two screens - a Dell E172FP 17" (bought for $250 shipped from eBay in Dec. 04) and a Dell Ultrasharp 1704FPT 17" (bought new $200 shipped from Dell.com in June 05). Goes to show how the prices are dropping, the difference in quality between the two monitors is quite noticeable when you mirror the image. Up against my G4's Apple Studio Display (last model CRT Apple ever made), they are far clearer and brighter, and the image doesn't wiggle or waver when something bright is in a select area like CRTs. I will never voluntarily own a CRT again.
As for the 17" .. I can't really go any bigger. Truthfully, if I had my way, I'd probably own a couple 15" Dell LCDs with 1280x1024 resolution ... given if they existed ...

If I had the $ to throw around right now, you can bet I'd have a pair of the Dell 19" LCD's sitting on my desk at home. They run deals on them ALL the time, making them even MORE attractive. But, I'm waiting until I've got a second vid card to really make the purchase.
