Firstly:

its the starter, most likely. Replace it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Secondly..
to alleviate the grinding for NOW..

leave the car in gear, rock the car from front to back until the car hits the stop (from being in gear) a few times, then start it.. it should seat the teeth better and buy you less grinding (which is damaging to the flywheel, and is EXPENSIVE to replace that..)


so.. avoid grinding as above.

replace ASAP to avoid flywheel replacement.
check flywheel teeth when replacing for tooth wear

EDIT: rocking the car is not the way to avoid buying a new starter.. it is temporary, at best.
