I mainly ride an alpine board nowadays, for reasons similar to you going in the park. I just got bored of skidding to the bottom, and I like to ski fast, which is kinda hard in Michigan. Alpine boards can be ridden on a flat hill and still rip 3" ruts.
I found bomberonline.com and that fueled my move to plates and a long skinny board. Stazi supposedly started on an alpine late last year, but we haven't been out together since.
I think riding in the parks looks fun, but it's strange to see somebody actually pulling air and doing tricks. Most of these kids just sit at the top of the park waiting for something.....
