Heres my $.02 I lurk these forums quite a bit. Although I have piped into a religious or political debate once or twice, I usually roll my eyes when I see one, read 1 or 2 posts, and then go on. What angers me is when non political threads are hijacked, and turned into debates. I will also agree, every political thread is like a rerun of the previous one, just with different insults and name calling.

My suggestion? Another forum I visit once and awhile (Rage3d) had once totally banned political and religious posting. Now, they have opened up a seperate "forum" if you will. You agree by signing up for this forum that you will act mature and respectful. If not, you are banned from the politics and religion forum, but not from the rest of the topics. That way, us not as political people can enjoy the CI forum ,and not have to worry about every thread being turned into left vs right. FAQ for P&R forum

Although I enjoy politics, and even lean towards one side more than the other, I stay clear of these conversations, as I would probably get so upset that I would end up bickering back and forth as well. Anyways, sorry for the long novel, I just really think this might work out well here.

i agree with just banning political and religious posts. they seem to be the ones that repeatedly turn into the nastiest threads. this is a car forum after all.

but then again, people will then just hijack other threads or find other things to argue about

yep it's a car forum, but CI is a place where car lovers go to to talk about things other than cars, that also interest them.
I hate the political debates as much as anyone, but there is a certain degree of healthy debating that goes on, that I think shouldn't be discouraged.
eventually they turn into utter crapfests and then we deal with them accordingly, but to squelch them all as soon as the L or C words are mentioned, is just b/s.

Of course, the problem was that Damon (site operator) still made his political views known on a regular basis, including in his avatar.

Anyway, as it stands, I'm with the "don't look" crowd... I'm disheartened by the sharp polarization into black and white political camps that is so prevelant in the US in general, and seeing it here isn't helping. So what do I do? I don't click on political threads.

However, I would not be opposed to strict penalties for non-politcial thread-hijacking. People like to debate? Cool, but do it in another thread.

I can't understand how it would make anyone "feel better" to ban controversial topics from a forum. If you don't want to have anything to do with a thread, you won't click it, unless you're some type of masochist or something. Which leaves us with the possibility that someone might get "offended" at seeing the thread title itself... to which I suggest that person probably doesn't belong on the internet if he's going to get offended anytime he glances at a few words he doesn't like.

Of course, even as people put in their $.02, there are political arguments going on within this thread...
