Turning into my apt complex yesterday, I hear a loud *PONG* come from the right rear. Took a look in the light today, looks like the subframe mounting tab sheared clean off. For the record, stock SVT swaybar and bushings, no rear suspension mods, 70k miles, no winter salt damage anywhere. I haven't kept up with this forum, I honestly didn't even know this was an issue. The powers of search!

You know my car handles pretty damn good for not having the aussie bar even connected to the subframe...

I found that out when it was on the lift. The factory little bolt holes and slots are undamaged, leading me to believe it was never hooked up... I mean, there are no bolts there, which I would assume if the factory type mount broke, the bolts would stay in the subframe.

But anyhow, I think it will have to wait until I get it in Germany to get the subframe all beefed up.

The factory subframe was underdesigned, underengineered and poorly welded to top it off. I've pulled subframes from low mileage, softly driven cars with 18mm sway bars which had the subframe sway bar mounts bent. An additional 2 inches of weld around the "socket" would have been an immense improvement. You think maybe Ford knew something when they downsized the rr sway bars starting in '98?

Once it's torn, there's only 1 way to fix it right.....

Hahaha!

I think reinforced subframes as a drop-in are dumb: it's very easy to fix one up, and much cheaper!

Thanks for the feedback but I don't have a garage much less welding tools or supplies.

Louis: Yes I sell repaired/buttressed subframes. Last time I shipped one to RI it wasn't too expensive (approx. $35) considering the rather large, awkward shape/size.

By having a spare subframe you're minimizing downtime. You simply swap and away you go. As opposed to removing the old one, getting to the welder/fabricator, having the work done (if they can do it immediately) then taking it home and reinstalling.

Who purchased the one in RI Go for Brad's subframe, he does GREAT work, very happy with it

BAT offers one as well, though pricey ($375), its a new Ford part reinforced.
