What accident? I was in Boston that day.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I would not recommend ignoring the insurance company's claim against you, or denying to them that you were involved. They will not spend the time to deal with you, they will sell the claim to a collection agency, and those goons will start coming after you for the $2500 and then your life will get about 3 times more unpleasant even than it is now.
Also, be honest with yourself, you have to know what's going on in the road far ahead, not just watch the one car in front of you. I'm trying not to be glib and trite and condescending, because I know accidents can happen to anybody, but they do teach you in driver's ed to watch 2 cars in front of you. My point is mainly that you will have a very hard time dodging responsibility for this rear-ending.
Contact the other guy's insurance co. Explain what happened, you don't think you're entirely at fault, and that the repair bill is inflated, and offer them for example $1000. If they don't want to deal, call your insurance co and let them handle it. If and when your rates go up, shop around for a new insurer and compare rates. If you can't find anything better, then at least you get to pay a little more each month rather than coughing up 2 Large all at once on the spot.
As you can probably guess, I had a similar situation, except I was riding my bike so no possibility to get insurance to cover it. Ha ha. I hid behind a lawyer for a while who basically did nothing, after a year or so the collection agency was threatening to ruin my credit so I coughed it up. I wish I'd handled it differently so I'm passing my experience on to you.
Good luck.

i was in a situation where i was at a store backing out of my parking spot then waiting to go back on the road (store on the side of the road) as i was waiting to go back on the road this lady was backing out and her tire hit the corner of my right bumper didnt do any damages. so i asked the lady can i see your drivers license and insurance car so we can switch information, she said why it didnt do any damages i said well i wanna report it to my insurance because you can go off saying it hit you, she goes well theirs no damages and i isaid look lady i just want to report it to my insurance and tell them you hit me but their is no damages. she she went on and on and arguing so i said fine i call the sheriffs. as i was waiting the lady decided to show me her insurance while the sheriffs were on its way im like now you show me. the store costumers got pissed at me they said just let it go im like no. anyways i called the cops they got there with there sirens i told the sheriffs office it not an emergency. well anyways they talked to the lady she got some girl saying they i backed in to her this girl was sitting in her truck which you cannot see my car from her truck. anyways i told the sheriffs i said look all i wanted to do is get her insurance i know it was an accident from her hitting me (she should of looked while backing out) but all i wanted to do is report it to my insurance so she cant go off and said i backed in to her, i told him i aint tryin to get money from her. i wanna report it to my insurance. anyways its too damn early and my typing probably doesnt make sense so heres my story lol
my point is always report to you insurance i dont care if it's his fault you call your insurance. dont wait till you here from his insurance or your insurance.

That's the sad truth of it.
I got a ticket for this... "failure to stop in assured clear safe distance" after skidding on snow and clipping a truck that stopped for a yellow light.

I know this. But I shouldn't be held 100% liable for his damages. At the least it should be 50/50.

Yes...and no.
Yes, you have to maintain safe distance etc, but since the car in front of Red hit another car, Red hitting that car is considered part of the same accident. It's a chain reaction thing. You can't be expected to stop on a dime when the yahoo in front of you isn't paying attention. The person who caused the accident is responsible for everything that happens as a result of that accident.
This is the way it works in Washington State. I can't be completely sure how it works in Maryland. This is why a lawyer is so completely necessary. Otherwise you're just going to get screwed into paying it.
Yes, you're going to have to pay the lawyer, but I'd much rather give a lawyer money than someone who doesn't deserve it. It's a matter of principle there.

Its your fault. You should be help 100% liable. I do however think that the cost for repair shouldn't be more then $1000. 2600 is crazy

If there's no accident report, there's no actual proof it actually happened. Tell that guy to shove it.
