Grr. I replaced this friggin' part at least twice, maybe three times, on my '95, and now my '97 is starting to exhibit that same idle variance, where it idles normal, then sounds like it drops 100-200 rpm for 2-3 seconds, then back, then down, then back, then sometimes it catches itself at the normal place for a little while. I need to pull it off, hit it with carb cleaner, and see if I can get more life out of it, because I am SICK of spending money on that little widget.
Oh well, it'll be an excuse to rummage around under the hood and look for wiring cracks. This car is still 99M03 eligible.

When the IAC asts up from being dirty, it is slow to respond. That doesn't sound like the case here as you are describing that it is hunting for idle speed.

Hmm...OK, so where should I be looking to cure this? This is the first time I've had a MTX Duratec and had this symptom; my recollection of dealing with IAC failure on my ATX Duratec may be fuzzy.
Maybe I've got a vacuum leak in there somewhere...that's entirely possible.

my IAC acts up in the COLD winter. Basically it just drops the car to about 300-250rpms and just bounces up and down trying to keep the engine from stalling.

Yes, weird things happen when it is cold and yes, this is also what I suspect...

Vacuum leaks will make it bounce around at idle. The connectors where the brake booster and other vacuum lines go into the intake manifold on mine have a small leak. I sprayed carb cleaner around the intake system and found 2 leaks so far. Other one was where the EGR valve bolts to the UIM.

my idle would hunt (almost stall) when first started, and then when I held the rpm's up for a minute, it would then idel normal and stable...does that sound like an IAC?

I just replaced my O-rings and the idle is OK now. Used to jump all over, especially when cold.

Seriously unlikely, since all the gaskets are new as of a few months back when a bunch of us did mani cleanings. It might just be an issue of finding if there's a bolt or two that's backed out, but I dunno. Haven't really looked into it recently.
