I've noticed without some sort of physical contact, K&N filters don't get clean. Hard to avoid brushes or compressed air. Gunk stays in the grooves even with multiple application of the cleaner.
I'll add that to my list of 'con's' right next to worrying about oiling too much after cleaning(which messes up the MAF sensor).

I tap it down on a hard surface after it has been soaking in the cleaner for a while and it des a good job of dislodging the crud. Then washing it from the inside out with the hot water on full out of the tap takes care of the rest.

If you blast it too close to the cloth you can open up large holes in the cloth allowing large particles to enter the intake. I would refrain from using compressed air.

FWIW, when I was at NOPI in atlanta, K&N had a booth and spoke to them about their filters. They said the biggest problem they had was people overcleaning the filters because they looked dirty. They said that 30K miles on some oil with all the dirt that is in it is nothing on these filters and better in the long run. I don't even bother to clean mine now, at least not for another year or so.

The mantra I've always heard about K&Ns (and other cotton gauze filters?) is that they dirtier they are, the better they filter. At least until the amount of dirt starts restricting the flow. I think that the 2.8 years of dirt on my Sport's filter may be starting to affect its performance

Would a dirty K&N still flow more than a clean fresh paper filter?

Not sure but I've seen that rig at some performance shops where you can switch between a stock paper filter and the K&N replacement filter and see the difference in flow through a pin-pong ball manometer. It's pretty cool.
