Why would a bad hydrocarbon count make you think the engine is bad? It could be any number of inexpensive things. No need to panic until you know what the problem is.

Still...that doesn't make sense. Exhaust gases shouldn't mix into the antifreeze liquid. Is the antifreeze getting cloudy at all? Oil levels fluctuating a lot? Are you also burning any antifreeze?
No mention of if you've done the basic maintenance, like the plugs, cleaning of throttle body or intakes. For all we know, maybe the machine was off the scale.

Hunh? I doubt that exhaust gases in the coolant would heat it up enough to cause it to boil.....of course I could be wrong.
If you describe the issues in detail, we might be able to posit a solution that's much cheaper than a 3.0 swap.
However, if you are simply looking for an excuse for the 3.0 swap, many of us are "car people" and understand completely.

One cheap way to test if the head or headgasket is shot is this.
Fill antifreeze to the brim on recovery tank (leave cap off). Remove all spark plug wires. Remove all but one spark plug and have someone crank the engine. If the antifreeze bubbles over, there is leak from that portion of the engine (or cylinder). If not, go to the next cylinder, and then the next.... Note, it could be more than one area or more than one cylinder. Good luck.
