Warranties add to the cost of a car. Yes, a good idea if you don't know what you're buying or how to do repairs. I do some warranty work on a dealership's used vehicles here, so also helps my income.
You may want to check with other insurance companies. Yes, I'm sure georgia has cheaper insurance, but I could be paying $110 as well, through a different company and without multi-car discounts and other discounts.
However ... $3K car with "at least" $3K of troubles (I assure you I've paid well more than that on repairs in the past year on my Contour) leaves you without a car for potentially weeks or months out of the year. No good if you drive an hour one way to a job ... I'd MUCH rather pay even $30K if it can ensure me peace-of-mind and a loaner when I need.

For my purposes leasing works because it provides me with these promises:
1) I will always have a vehicle less than 4 years old. 2) I will always have a vehicle with a factory warranty. 3) I will never have to pay for replacement of wear items. 4) I can afford to drive a nicer car than I can afford to buy. 5) Everything on my vehicle will always work flawlessly, and in the rare chance that something breaks on a 3 year old Toyota, Honda, etc., it isn't my problem. 6) I will never be without a car due to repairs.
For those of you who don't mind driving cars that aren't less than 3 years old, and don't have a warranty, and don't mind replacing tires and wipers and brakes, and don't mind having sunroofs that are stuck closed for months on end, and don't mind not having a car while your transmission is being replaced, buying is fine. I absolutly hate replacing stuff, and having broken stuff, and not having a car, etc. So buying simply doesn't work for me.

Imagine the sweet used bwm, lexus, infiniti, etc. that you could have... certainly no match for a less than 3 year old corolla though.

But not having a car payment is pretty nice too.

I guess it really depends on where you put your money/priorities. I'm OK with driving a 10 year old car, I could drive a brand new, top-of-the-line 500, Accord, BMW, etc. But I don't - instead, I focus on making sure the bills are paid, the baby is feed and that my family can survive if both me and my fiance lost our jobs. Come to think of it, my other car ('91 Honda Accord) has it's own set of problems that I'd like to [censored] slap Honda engineers for.

I'm with Tisby, though, eventually I'd like to think I'd be able to afford most any domestically mdae vehicle I want yet still purchase something well below my "status" so to speak.

CPW needs to sell his Contour and start catching the bus. Ownership of a vehicle for him is the equivalent of an average person leasing the QEII to go fishing for tadpoles down the local creek - not a financially sound investment.
This will do two things: 1) Stop his god-damned, moronic, non-sensical, aneurism -inducing, menutia-infested posts, on this board 2) Save him from going bankrupt due to the fact he cannot even change a set of wiper blades by himself and hence pays out the ASS for every single job on his car, cos he can't/won't do it himself.

6) I will never own my car.
Sorry, had to fix the quotes here for a dose of reality.

Now *that* I can agree on. I'd rather have a new car, with warranty, for 5, 6 years, then have it paid off and do what I want with it, similar to what's going to happen with my SVT.
I don't mind used cars, but, after my wife getting a NEW car a couple years ago, now I *want* a new car.
And, thank you for getting "peace-of-mind" correct.
