My dad & I had a discussion AT LEAST 15 years ago about flashing/brightening brake lights & how they'd have advantages . I guess we should've ACTED on our thoughts .

Individual rear turn signals were a hot topic of conversation on CEG around late 2001, with several people IIRC wishing we could have them and possibly trying to figure out a way how.
I saw a flashing third brake light on a modified Honda (Civic? can't remember) in Worcester once last year. It flashed about the same rate as a turn signal would. Initially thought it was the coolest thing in the world, till I followed him for 1/4 mile in city traffic ... very annoying after that!
However, I'm all for fast-flashing lights during emergency stops.

When I worked at Signature L/M, we used this thing called "Red Alert". It was a small realy we tapped into the 3rd brake light. I would make it blink about 10 times everytime you hit the brakes. The State police in this area use it on all their vehicles.
It cost about $30 for it.
We use to tell the customer that research showed people had become compliant with the 3rd brake light since it's introdcution in 1986 and people have started to ignore them. This flashing option would attract the attention of the person behind you and will help prevent a rear end collision.
The company that sold them even had a guarentee that if you car was hit from behind, they would pay up to $1,500 in damages or something like that.

This sounds really annoying to me. Of course, I also hate brake lights come wagons, minivans, and SUV's are putting above the belt line, as they are very annoying as well.

I'm not sure about a blinking brake light. it's like blinking text on a web page.. annoying. can you imagine sitting in traffic forced to watch hundreds of blinking lights? I'd have a seizure.
an adaptive brake light which only blinks at a preset (high) pressure would be more acceptable.

I think a strobe would be effective... add a little strobe in the taillights, and when the car determines you are emergency braking, the strobe is activated.
Pretty much the same idea as the flashing brake lights under hard braking, but would be seen better...
Probly not feasible to put strobes in every car... then the ricers would probly tap into them and make them flash all the time.
Mercedes vehicles have had the ability to detect emergency braking for a few years. If you stomp the brake pedal, the computer will take over and apply WAY more pressure than humanly possible. ABS keeps them from locking up.

They should look to our own member, GMK, for a good non-annoying flashing brake.
He wired a part of some LED thing sold at autozone into his third brake light. It's hard to describe, but it never really turns off when braking, and it flashes in a non-annoying but very attention grabbing, and pretty cool way.
