All,
I broke the top ring on one of my pistons while cleaning them up. What is my best bet on replacing the ring(s)? This is from a 2003 Escape 3L.

Just seems like every time I turn around, another problem crops up.

Thanks!

Well, since rings that are broke-in usually break-in on one cylinder, I wouldn't advise using a used ring from another cylinder. Piston yes, ring no. I'd just order the ring set from ford for that one piston. That would probably run you around $50. I know it sucks but it is the best way to insure you don't handicap yourself with a potentially non sealing ring in that cylinder, or a ring that has one wear pattern and then may wear out quicker in a different cylinder.
You shouldn't have to do any cylinder prep with a new ring, especially if this is a low mileage escape. Remember to install the new rings by expanding the rings, not twisting them. There are ring expanders at Autozone you can get on loan for a day.
You know by now that I like to save money but I'm not exactly cheap. This is one area you don't want to be cheap.

Yeah, I know now not to twist Oh well, live and learn.

I have tried to find the parts on-line, but for some reason I don't see listings rings on a 2003 3L. All I can find are whole Piston w/Ring assembly Any ideas?

Would it be a bad idea to purchase Stilov's used 2003 Taurus pistons? They have ~2000k miles on them, as a 2nd option.

Thanks for your help!

Oooh. Call Bill J. just in case you can get the set separately. Ford may try to sell it as an assembly though so in that case yeah, get the best top compression ring he has because I wouldn't spend $200+ for a piston assembly.

I want you to build it right...but FYI the pistons I have showed almost zero wear...per machine shop. So maybe that's the upside. But do check first with Bill. I didn't think the rings would have much value...but I thought 50 for all 6 pistons wasn't bad.

Stilov,
Definately, that is a great price and I really appreciate it. Going to check with Bill J. to see if I can simply get some rings as the engine I have only has about 20K on it. If that is not possible that I will gladly take you up on the pistons

Thanks guys!

Okay guys,
Received my rings today from Bill J. First off, I want to say how great it is to have Bill as a resource for parts. He finds exactly what I need EVERY time, and ships them out as soon as he possibly can. We are lucky to be affiliated with him!

I received 1 package of part YF1Z-6148-BA. The package contains 2 ring sets at a cost of $30. If someone is looking to replace the stock 3L rings on all 6 pistons, total cost would be ~$90 + shipping.

Can someone put this tidbit of information into the FAQ?

Thanks!
