Am in the process of installing a remanufactured CD4E in a 98 Contour SE 2.5L. When I was removing the ATX the manual said to remove the starter before dropping the ATX. It appears that it would be easier to mount the starter on the ATX before mating the ATX back to the engine. Am I missing something??? Also, while I had the ATX out I replaced the rear engine oil seal. The manual says I should replace the flwheel bolts. Does this sound reasonable? Are flywheel bolts like the modern head bolts; can they only be torqued once????

THANKS

Good question.

I do not see any reason why it could not be installed before hand if you are installing the transmission from the bottom. Though I'm going from memory as I do not have a CD4E in front of me to look at.
The MTX and it's starter could be installed that way.

If you have some maneuvering room it would be fine but if you've got to slip it straight down next to the block then you might run into getting it snagged on the block or the flexplate. Worse case you just pull it back off if you try to stick it in and it gets caught.
