I do not see any reason why it could not be installed before hand if you are installing the transmission from the bottom. Though I'm going from memory as I do not have a CD4E in front of me to look at. The MTX and it's starter could be installed that way. 2000 SVT #674 13.47 @ 102 - All Motor! It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.
