Alternator finally took a dump after 105K, now I've had a Ford Alt sitting in a box for a while because I knew it was going to fail soon. However the Alt does not have a pulley on it. I am having fun trying to think of how I can get the old pulley off. I can't get enough leverage to hold the Alt steady while I turn the nut.

Is this something that is do-able, or do I need to take it to a machine shop. I don't have air tools.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Cougar,

Just did this ... seemed impossible with hand tools. I bought an electric impact wrench (Dewalt) and it spun off like magic. I've heard various opinions about the usefulness of electric vs. air, and my opinion is that this wrench seemed up to the job.

I had a screwdriver jammed in the case to keep it from rotating, and actually cracked the cast housing while leaning on my ratchet. The impact wrench worked with me holding the pulley by hand. I'm sure all who use impact tools will take this for granted, but I really was surprised at how easily the impact wrench took it off.

alright well I got the pulley off using a strap wrench and a 1/2" breaker bar.

However my question now is, how tight does that nut have to be on? I can only go so much before the shaft turns and the pulley doesn't.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the idea Ed. I also tried putting a screwdriver into one of the more substanial holes in the case, but that just bent the old one and didn't move the pulley so I didn't want to try it with the new one. I'm kind of in a rush to get this done as I have an 8 o'clock class so I don't really have the choice of getting an impact at the moment.

Thanks.

When I did mine, I figured "pretty tight" was enough, because the normal belt tension will act in the tightening direction. Shop manual says 45 N-m.

I'm not sure about your case where the pulley spins without the shaft turning: missing washer or something?

It only spins when I'm really tightening it down, I'll go and torque it down. There was no washer with the nut. Didn't look like there should have been either.

Thanks for your help Ed.
