That is scary. My best friend went from 4th to 2nd in his BMW 3 series on a corner and did the same thing...minus all the carnage. He simply spun around about 6 times and knicked a pole. The car was repaired. Scary to think what could've happened.

I think the latest Craparo's and TransMas had that too. GM should be sued for that. Makes the shifters in our cars seem great.

Possibly, but it would be harder. Basically what happened was the down-shift created major engine braking. It was similar to pulling the e-brake. On a FWD car, it would be like slamming on the front brakes only. I would think if you did loose traction you would plow forward instead of fish-tailing. With a Contour the Diff would prolly shatter, then the tranny would lock right up and thus the front wheels.

Wow! I'm glad he's alright. Looks like he could have gotten injured pretty bad.

The lock-out only hapens at low speeds on the GM T56 transmissions. You can easily get past it by revving over 2500rpm or putting in a solenoid that fools the computer. From what you are describing he was going at least 100mph so it wouldn't have taken effect. That engine would have ben trashed anyway because of the money shift.

Sorry to hear about it.

that's what i was thinking. it seems the spin is what induced the roll. in FWD, he would have probably plowed and hit head-on. i think the head-on is a bit more predictable.

but he was so lucky to begin with, he could have had *more* injuries if the air bag went off: burns, eye iritation, etc.

I think he still went into the field head on. He hit the clutch as soon as he realized what happened, but he was already sideways. He then tried to correct, but crossed the double yellow and went head on into a ditch off the opposite side of the road and went end over end! The end over end turned into a side over side, if you can picture that.
