Interesting. If I were to go through with it, what else should I do at the same time (with the block out already and all)?

Well, if/when I do mine, I'll probably install new front LCAs and other suspension parts while the engine's off the subframe.

I just discovered a DIY garage that rents a garage spot, lift, cherry picker, and all the necessary tools I would need to do this on my own (as in, with a friend who knows more than me) for $4 an hour.

How much should that change this whole equation?

$4 an hour isn't bad...until ou hit a snag and get the car going!

the Spec V was stupid to drive - yeah for twisted beam rear axles.

The WRX is crap in stock form - the suspension sucks - understeer here we come!

you could look into a Mazdaspeed Protege. With little money you can make it a speedy little car - the stereo is already REALLY good (saving you $$$$) and the suspension is REALLY hard to beat. The car handled so well it beat the pants off of many high priced cars in a R&T handling test.

MSP - cheap fun speed.
SRT4 - cheap fun SPEED

there are many cheap used cars to consider.

Here's a new facet. I've already compared modding my own Contour to newer cars but what about comparing it to buying a Contour that already has the 3.0L swap done?

I see them go for around $8000 and it takes away the possibility of me messing up my install.

The new 06 WRX TR is an insane deal.

If you're going new, the best successor for the CSVT is the TSX.

Doesn't have as nice a sounding engine (I've always hated I4's) and its upper on the price chain but it's pretty much a modern day CSVT without the pedigree.

Don't bother with that Jackson Racing SC. That Eaton M45 will never satisfy you. Give us a budget of what you are willing to spend and we can tell you what is do-able.

Well I bought a wrx wagon...now i am selling it...not b/c it's a bad car. I really like, and with the wagon you can actually haul some stuff (I hauled my 3L to the machine shop)

I like the contour b/c it's familiar, unique, and my own creation now.

I am just never satisfied for long however.

Many cars come to mind:

Subaru LGT
Altima SE/SE-R
Mitsu EVO
WRX STi
MS6
BMW 325/328/330/M3

I'm not sure I'd invest in the 3L conversion, YMMV however. You end up with a car that is difficult to work on, highly customized, older, and in most cases not even as fast as most of the cars listed above bone stock, with little to no aftermarket available, whereas with the cars above, you start out in a much better position, and can go faster from there.
