There is a cured white adhesive holding the halves together. That adhesive cannot be melted or desolved away. You have to actually grind a lip off the housing all the way around the seam. Then, you CAREFULLY and slowly pry the lens away from the base. When I did my first set (my own lights) I went into the project expecting to totally ruin them. It just turned out that I did them right the first time.
