You would need to do A LOT of work. The pre-98 sticks out a little in the grille area. It also makes contact with the bumper. You also need to figure in for differend slopes in the the fenders. The post 98s are also a lot flatter then the pre 98s. If you want to get custom, make a post-98 Mystique hood fit a post-98 Contour!
In all, I would look at buying a hood out of the junkyard. If your friend is into body work he would probably thank you when all he had to do was some slight prep work.
