I only needed 1 of the connectors from Bill. Hmmm, I agree, I think you tapped into the wrong wire. Mine comes on when the ignition is on, the same as the power window and lock switches. And is off the rest of the time. I followed the instructions in the How-to to a "t" and have had no problems.
