This was my first break-in, also. I got lucky but I still don't like it. 
Ambient light often works against you ... they can clearly see in your car to make a quick smash-and-grab. One of my friends' cars was broken into and he was parked diagonal/under the parking lot light (which meant the light pretty much flooded his interior and made that shiny new head unit clearly visible, as well as any steps thieves might need to take to get it out quickly.)
