Well, thanks for the informative comments. I'm kind of ticked off at the thought that I probably didn't get what I paid for. Maybe $350 for a block with 10k on it is just too good to be true. I got it from an LKQ located in Oregon btw. I'll probably have to give them a call to complain.

The crank will be fine if you take it in to be polished I think. It may be fine even without polishing but it is always nice to have the insurance when dealing with the lower end. It is forged after all and the marks will come off easy. THey will also size the bearings for you once you get it polished.
Those bearings look like [censored]. Good cleaning of the block and running good lube on new bearings and you shouldn't have any future problems. Pistons will be fine when cleaned up but make sure the cylinder walls aren't scratched too. If they look good then just resuse the pistons and put on new Ford rings as they have the correct tension on them. Unless the original rings are good, but I find that hard to believe since the bearings looked like that.
Build it right and you'll be fine.

warmonger, the pics of the wasted bearings above are from the 2.5 that went bad. From your response I wasn't sure if you thought that they came from the 3.0. The rod bearings from the 3.0 actually looked perfect.
But yeah, I'll definitely get the crank polished. I already have a set of Clevite rod bearings ready to go on. And I figured since they're out I'll throw in new Clevite mains too. Rings also sound like a great idea just to be safe.

And as far as a possible sand contamination goes. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought I read that an 01 taurus was considered safe and not part of the batch of certain 3.0's produced that may have been affected by this issue.
