has anyone seen this during cam installation? there is a gap between the links and sprockets. see photos. any ideas why this is? or if its a problem?

we're wondering if the oil pressure will keep the chain tight when the motor is running or if we need to go back and redo this section of the install.

Something is wrong. Should be completely flush. Are you using SVT cams on a 3L or what? We need details. I hope you've got the right width chains to cams.

svt cams and chains (wide) on 3L motor. all per the 3L stickie and stazi's advice.

so i guess we need to pull it apart and redo it huh?

what is the procedure for positioning the cams? the cd manual says to leave off the thrust caps (caps closest to the sprockets) and properly position the cam using the thrust caps before tightening the other caps. the manual doesnt explain how you use the caps to position the cam. he is pretty sure he did this correctly but possible that the chain wont fit if the cam is slightly off position axially. thoughts?

The cams rotated backwards while you were trying to phase them.

Just do it over and you will be fine.

I did see you used all timing components of the same pitch right? (no mix & matching timing parts - chains, gears, cams, or guides)

thanks. he says he thought about that but didnt think it was possible because the chain should pull down tight. i guess we'll just try it again.

what about the procedure for aligning the cams with the thrust caps?

Is there tension on the chains? Is that on the tensioner side or the chain guide side?
Could be ok just as Demon said by tightening everything up and seeing how the timing marks fall.

All four cams look that way? If so then I'd think you have the wrong pitch chains on. Chances are it isn't if those came out of the same engine then look at the offset of your crank sprocket. You have to use the same chains, guides, tensioners, and crank sprocket for it all to line up right. If you did all that then just re-time it once more and see what happens.
