But on snow or ice, I felt like my T-Bird's and Mark VIII's ABS systems were trying to kill me. If I modulated the pedal to keep the wheels from locking up, I could get stopped pretty quickly. If I stomped on it like ABS is supposed to let you do, it felt like the brakes were doing basically nothing, and took about 3 times longer to get stopped.
Maybe newer ABS setups are better. I'd sure hope so.
They aren't, on my parents' Subarus (2000 and 2002) at least and my dad's old 1998 Windstar. I hate ABS specifically for this reason. I can never stop in time at the end of an intersection when driving their cars in the snow because the brakes thought they were locking up (which they are basically supposed to do in snow) and ABS activated. No matter how light I brake the car will slide into the middle of the intersection under heavy snow.
At least my Contour doesn't have it, one thing I like about the car

Id say its debatable if ABS stops you faster than non ABS brakes but its main purpose of course is to keep your tires from locking up and you loosing control. My old Grand Marquis didnt have ABS and i loved how well it would stop but if i ever really slammed the brakes i would loose all traction in the front wheels and that is no fun.

See, in Texas we don't really have to worry to much about things like SNOW and BLACK ICE, so ABS always works, excluding wacky oil spills laid down by other motorists(that's another story entirely COUGH) But seriously, ABS has saved my tail more times than I care to remember. So many times has some stupid reject STOPPED on the off-ramp and almost killed me. Thanks to ABS I am here, and my Merc is unscathed. However, I really have no experience with snow and the likes, so listen to the other dudes.

Eh, then you need to be more careful about how you're driving in heavy snow. ABS or not, I've never had that problem. The only time something like that happened to me was on solid ice. In the middle of a bad storm, I was going down a hill that was totally frozen and led to an intersection. I was doing 10-15 mph, but that didn't matter. I braked hard, and the ABS did it's thing... but ABS or not, I would have just kept sliding through that intersection, which is what happened, because I lost all traction completely. Fortunately, the only oncoming car was doing about 25 mph and was a hundred meters or more away, so I got away unscathed.
ABS is a huge plus. If you've ever tried to threshold brake in a car with conventional brakes, then you realize how much work ABS is doing for you. Insurance companies will give you a discount for having ABS.

They don't seem to give me a discount. $170 a month full coverage, spiffy-clean driving record.

Correction: Most insurance companies give a discount for ABS because it is a safety feature. I'm actually not 100% sure if I'm getting a discount or not, lol.
$170 seems a little high, I'm paying $120 a month also with a squeaky clean record and full coverage. Probably because my deductable is $1000 though Yeah, I have faith that I won't be causing any accidents. Oh, and I am getting a good student discount.

Check out my kitty.. I pay 57.00 a month on that one too and they have full glossy pictures and a complete mod list as well and receipts to prove that I threw 9k into the paint and body earlier this year.

Punk. I hate you. Why do I have to pay as much as I do for a 4-cylinder Mercury?
