My Contour's had regular oil since I got it new. Just follow the 3K/3 month interval and you should be fine. Always check oil level and look under after going to these quick lube places (for peace of mind). Also check to make sure they put back the air filter and housing properly too.

I've got 185,100 on mine, and I haven't replaced anything but fluids/filters, rubber items, spark plugs, and front pads. I'm still running the original rear brakes, and original spark plug cables. Front brake pads have been replaced just once (orignal pads lasted until 105,000 miles), tires have been replaced twice (current set of tires has 80,000 miles on them with over 7/32nds of tread left). I'm planning on reaching the 250,000 mark. How much longer will I keep the car after that? I don't know, I am kind of getting new car fever!

So Roger never used conventional to break in the engine?

And the point of all this was what? Are you stating that you've used conventional motor oil it's entire life?

I think he was referring to the general durability of the Contour. This thread just migrated to oil changes after the synthetic oil issue was brought up.
Original post by Thomas Brown. "Heard from a tech that 80,000 miles on the contour is about the point where things start going south. Has anyone else had problems past 80,000? I currently have 70,000 and I have owned this contour for four years now. The only thing I have done is replaced tie rods, rebuilt the alternator, and replaced the fan control unit for the air/heat (I forgot what they called it but it's underneath the passenger side dash and controls the air/heater fan speed)
Should I expect any major problems? I heard the transmission is one of the first to go and will cost 2,000.00 minimum."

Car came with motorcraft's oil in, and was drained out at 2953 miles for Mobil 1 sythetic.
Guess that isn't day one, lol.

Adding sythetic now could be devastating to the engine, as you could discover leaks, etc.
Load. Of. Crap.
I went to synthetic after I moved into my current house a year and a half ago (I was havign the oil changed by Jiffy Lube as I was in an apartment prior to that), and was around the 80K mark. 40K later and I have no leaks and things are working just fine.

Im about to hit 70,000 miles on my contour (4cylinder). I have always used Quakerstate oil in my car. The best is always change the oil when needed and DONT go over.

As a matter of fact, I'm about 30 miles from 80,000 miles. Many of these are regular maintenance, but I needed all new brakes, needed a tune-up (or got one anyways), had a bad MAF, which I think in-turn caused a bad O2 sensor, then I had another CEL for the IAC (but I had it erased since everything is running fine). So, while none of those is major, I've still had to spend about $1500 in the past few months on stuff. I'm not pissed, but I hope that's it for a while!
