SHOntell - I am going through similiar issues with my V6 Cougar . I've changed the thermostat because it is cheap and wanted to rule it out (going to do it again this a.m. - I hit the jackpot with a bad one !). I've also checked the vac lines and flushed the coolant .
You may very well have a clogged/partially blocked heater core .
