I have not tried to see how the blend door is operated on a Contour, but most cars today (unless they have auto temp) are operated by vacuum.
There has not been much trouble with the blend air doors on Contours, so check out the vacuum hoses for the heater controls and see if something is leaking vacuum.
It could be a vacuum hose that was knocked off while working on the radio for example.
