I have not tried to see how the blend door is operated on a Contour, but most cars today (unless they have auto temp) are operated by vacuum.

There has not been much trouble with the blend air doors on Contours, so check out the vacuum hoses for the heater controls and see if something is leaking vacuum.

It could be a vacuum hose that was knocked off while working on the radio for example.

SHOntell - I am going through similiar issues with my V6 Cougar . I've changed the thermostat because it is cheap and wanted to rule it out (going to do it again this a.m. - I hit the jackpot with a bad one !). I've also checked the vac lines and flushed the coolant .
You may very well have a clogged/partially blocked heater core .

So once I get to the blend door, then what?

Thanks for all the post and keep em coming.

Geez guys, read this .

Pull the motor off and see if it moves!
Often it still works but came loose from the door.

well if it was the theromostat you would notice a temp problem like it taking a long time to heat up or over heating or the gaue moving alot which he said he dosent have so its most likely the blend door , so dont just go replacing the thermostat, but thats a good deal that you replaced yours and it worked , good luck

Actually changed the thermostat as I had the hoses off and the housing apart anyway . In my original reply I stated "could very well have a clogged /partially blocked heater core" - which on *mine* was the problem . Simple heater core flush .

I know this is an old post, however I did not see a fix to your problem.

I've got a 99 mystique, and it was recently broken into

They took the radio and damaged my heating system as well.

Any way no heat, only really really cold. The temperature "mixer" knob is a rheostat (sp?) and when there is high resistance (or an open circuit, as in my case) the signal to the temperature blend door acutator is full cold. I have not fixed it yet, I'm getting a new control for the HVAC systems (you only need the connector for the heat/cold mixer knob).

Check the connection, and if your are desperate for an immediate fix PM me and I'll explain how to temporarily force only Heat!

Fuse F-23 15 amp feeds a VT/BK (six wire connector plugs into ) to the Electronic Variable Temp Door Motor and three wires (wh/bk, ye/bk & Bn/ye) go between the temp knob and the EVTDM.
EVTDM is located to left of blower motor faces the towards passenger side. Should be able to unplug the connector and with a ohm meter see fixed resistance ye/bk & Bn/ye. With one lead on Wh/bk and the other lead to either ye/bk or Bn/ye you should see the resistance vary the opposite of each other on the ye/bk & Bn/ye. Saves pulling the knob unless is what is bad. I have yet to have a failure on my 98 but it seem to me the EVTDM has failed in the past?
I'm looking at the fine Ford manual and it's electrical diagrams.
This is good to learn about though, I hate winter more and more. Hi Hi
If it wasn't cold now I'd run out in the garage, but isn't there a shaft that protrudes the can be turned manually to move the door? Been a couple years since I've had to get under there, and I don't miss it.
