I just replaced my DPFE last night, as my 96SE threw simultaneous P0401 and P0402 codes (Excessive and Insufficent EGR flows ). I regularly clean the EGR ports in the intake manifold, but double-checked the operation of the EGR valve -- it worked fine. Everything pointed to the DPFE being bad (it was the original one with almost 113K miles on it!). I snapped a picture of the original metal DPFE and the replacement Borg-Warner plastic DPFE (O'Reilly's for $53; lifetime warranty):

Is your DFPE installed diagonally now or did you just use one bolt?

If you're referring to the orientation of the DPFE's in the picture, they're turned sideways so both hose connections are visible (in the picture) on the original (metal) DPFE. When installed on the vehicle, the hose connectors point downward. Both DPFE's have large arrows stamped on them which indicate which side is up. TWO 8mm nuts hold the left/right sides of the DPFE to the engine.
I'll rotate the picture to avoid any confusion -- the second bolt hole is not visible on the original DPFE.

oh yes one way to verify egr flow is to disconect the vacuum hose at the valve and provide vacuum to it. with the engine idleing is should run very badly and possibly stall while providing vacuum. If it doesnt change the way the car idles then you have plugged passages. Also if the valve itself wont hold vacuum, the diaphram is bad. hope all this helps.

Alrightââ?¬â?? I replaced the DPFE this weekend and also cleaned the throttle body/EGR!!
It seems the smell is gone! Helll yeah! The only problem is that there still seems to be a lag (actually there is) in performance. I'm not sure what this could be now.
I've had a similar thing happen before but that was the AIC, yet this feels a bit different.
Any thoughts other than maybe changing the EGR valve and looking in the main cat?

Clean the MAF sensor and test for plugged exhaust by removing the O2 sensor (one at a time, Bank 1 lower, Bank 1 upper and then Bank 1 upper).

Might also test to see that the secondaries are opening...
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

When checking for a plugged exhaustââ?¬â??Do I take out the bank 1 lower O2 sensor and turn on the car then repeat with the other O2 sensors (removing one then driving the car to see if there is a gain in performance then moving on to the rest)?
What should I expect when doing this?

I believe the secondaries ARE opening because I do get the extra increase in power at around 4300 RPM's.

Correct on the procedure. You should expect this to go away. "there still seems to be a lag (actually there is) in performance".
