I just replaced my DPFE last night, as my 96SE threw simultaneous P0401 and P0402 codes (Excessive and Insufficent EGR flows ). I regularly clean the EGR ports in the intake manifold, but double-checked the operation of the EGR valve -- it worked fine. Everything pointed to the DPFE being bad (it was the original one with almost 113K miles on it!). I snapped a picture of the original metal DPFE and the replacement Borg-Warner plastic DPFE (O'Reilly's for $53; lifetime warranty):
