I have posted a couple of times asking what may be causing this awful rotten egg smell.
Well, a code popped up yesterday and it was P0401 (insufficient flow). I have suspected that the culprit was a catalytic converter.
My question is how to find out which converter is bad if this is the true problem.
Thanks!

Your P401 could be any number of things. Clogged egr passages, bad DPFE or even a broken green vacum hose on the egr valve. A bad cat would throw a P420 read these. link1 link2 link3 link4

I just purchased a new EGR valve and it has a slightly different design, It states it is for a 2000SVT, but the hose comes out the top has been moved off center.
Has anyone else experienced this or know id this would be correct?

The 2000 SVT has a different EGR then any other year. (also different UIM design it bolts too)
Also why did you buy an EGR??? It is NEVER the EGR valve.
It's either the DPFE, EGR ports, or a hose. Normally the DPFE.

It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.

I looked at the UIM and the part that bolts is exactly the same as the original EGR valve.
I'm not sure why I bought the valve and I can just take it back. What would you suggest me purchase instead to solve the issue?
Before I got the check engine light all was happening was the rotten egg smell. Now the car is starting to hesitate especially when the rpms are low in a higher gear(example-not shifting down). Although it is hesitating in normal driving as well.

I just looked at pics of a 1996 GL and it's EGR valve looks like the new one that they gave me for my 2000 SVT.

P0401 means DPFE sensor usually. My coworker on his 2001 Windstar and my 2001 Explorer both threw those codes. the DPFE was bad on both. The ford parts guy said these fail quite often because the sensors take a beating from the hot exhaust and just fail over time. Both of the vehiucles i mentioned had over 100,000 miles

Would this give me the rotten egg smell by the DPFE failing?
Does anyone have the part # for the DPFE and the suggested cost?

Start your efforts by returning the EGR and spending $0.
Do this.
If that doesn't get rid of the CEL & your symptoms are accompanied by a loss of power, unbolt the main cat section under the car & see if you can dump some debris out of the inlet. If you find some loose material, your pre-cats are failing & you'll need to change your manifolds, buy headers, or perform a 'mystery mod' (also known as gutting precats).
No loss of power & no debris? Try changing the DPFE. Perform a search for DPFE for it's location. Cost should be under $40 from dealer. Easy to change but access is tight.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
