Hmmm. Difficult decision. If price point matters, the Miata wins out hands down. Reliability-wise, hard to say, probably about the same, though the FI on the MS5 means higher maintenance costs long term. The S2000 engine is one of the best built engines in the world. It ships stock with forged crank, forged rods, forged pistons, reinforced aluminum block, and the list goes on. You can FI the S2000 engine to well over 400rwhp with little to no worries without touching the engine internals (however it is costly to FI the S2000). I've driven an S2000, I've not driven an MS5, so I can't really comment there. Stoplight racing between the MS5 and the S2000 you probably won't see much performance difference until the speeds rise above 70MPH at which point I'd say it's all S2000. Same with SCCA racing, since the speeds don't get ridiculous I'd imagine both cars will perform similarly with your average driver, though with a good driver I'd say advantage S2000.

I'd wait until we see the new MS5 come out in 06. That's when I plan to take a test drive in a Miata!

If the choice is these two, I'd take the Miata. They both are going to be an absolute riot to drive, but the Mazda is a lot more liveable on a daily basis. Better seats, more flexible powerband, better (and lockable) storage in the cabin. All these things matter when you own a car and get overlooked.

On the 2006, I really like it on a look/touch/feel basis (they only have one, so they aren't letting people drive them). It's the first MX-5 I can fit in with the top up.

mine was $23k in May, the height of convertible season. a dealer looking for $28k wasn't looking to sell you the car or just didn't take you seriously.

Edit: My dealer has 3 left: black, orange and red. an offer at $20k will have you driving off the lot at $22k.

That's putting it VERY nicely. You must have been in a very good mood. BMW has lost all sane thought in design.

I'm 6'2" and weigh in at 275. I'm not HUGE, but I'm not a small guy either. I sat in a S2000 at a dealer one time, and it was just hard for me to get my legs under the steering wheel. I practically had to climb in from the top!!!

6'3" and 200lbs and there is no way i can fit in a Miata without alot of neck bending. With the top down, the top of the winshield is in my face.

As for the Z4, I fit in there perfectly fine.

Never been in a S2000....but I'll agree the Honda is the best looking...
