I've got the half-shaft removed from the car and decided that I'll just go ahead and clean, re-pack, and replace the outer boot which was torn (why I removed it in the first place). Two questions...
1) How do I get the outer joint removed from the shaft?
2) Where can I get just an outer replacement boot?

Thanks,
Brad

You can get an outer replacement boot from NAPA (around $15-$20 IIRC). Go to the NAPA website and you can find it online. The outer joint is retained on the shaft spline by a snap ring. You will need snap ring pliers to remove the ring (I did it w/ needle nose pliers - not the best way to go). Good luck!

Got the snap ring out and down the shaft, but looks like these thing is in need of some help to come off the shaft. I'm thinking I want to tap the inner cage, cause pulling on the stub-shaft wasn't getting it done.

Okay, back out to the garage tonight and I got the stub off. I realize now that I didn't need to touch that external snap-ring to get the stub off, but I will need to remove it to get the new boot on. Yikes, just put a gash in my finger trying to get that snap-ring up on the splined section to be able to pound it off. Promptly called it a night at that point. Any tricks to getting that sucker off there other than a beefier tool?

I'm up to the re-assembly phase. Got the beefy snap ring back in place (a 12-pt 24mm deep socket makes a perfect driver). I put the whimpy snap ring back in place, but can't get the outer joint to slide over it. Is there a trick here? Maybe I just need a new one? I'm half-tempted to just remove the ring and use some red Loctite on the splines. If this thing starts making noise or rips another boot, I'll just go with a complete half-shaft any way. But I'd prefer to do it the right way.

Any BTDT advise appreciated....

Damn, I feel like I'm talking to myself here - hope somebody finds this useful some day...
Solved the problem of the joint not being about to get past the internal snap ring by putting a zip-tie around the snap ring and pulling it up snug. Then I was able to tap the joint on and over the snap ring, pushing the zip-tie down the shaft in the process. Once I was sure the joint had cleared the snap ring, I took a box cutter to the zip tie and tapped the joint the rest of the way into place. Buttoned up the boot and we've got a "good as new" half-shaft really to go back into action. All I need now is for the rain to stop, since the car is blocked up outside!

Once again, it seems I'm talking to myself - is anyone reading this thread?!

Now that the sun has finally come out again, I'm trying to get the half-shaft re-installed. What's the trick to getting this thing inserted back into the tranny? Again, these damn snap rings are killin' me! It seems like a bigger challenge here, as you can't really get a good solid whack on the half shaft due to the joints.

Anyone???

LOL Brad. Either you pissed off most of CEG or you should not post on a Saturday morning when everybody is having a hang over from Friday night (or it is just too hard to spell your screen name). Maybe you should post in troubleshooting next time where there is more traffic.

coat the end with some atx fluid. Have someone hold the shaft straight and place a small block of wood on the end and give it a few taps with a hammer. Works for me everytime.

Well, this (above) is sorta what I ended up doing without even reading this message, except I did it on my own. I attached the hub, which actually helped by giving me some mass out on the end. Some rocking back and fourth and it finally moved into place. I drove the car today for the first time in awhile!
