According to Champion, the innards are also different.

Case: The case burst strength is actually higher on the Mobil 1, but they are both stronger than they need to be.

Filter: The Mobil 1 scores higher for filtering efficiency, but the K&N scores higher for flow rate. It might be the same material, but the M1 has more pleats--perhaps too many? Anyway, efficiency still good for both filters, with the K&N at about 90%, and the M1 at 93-95% (going from memory, here.) Kind of splitting hairs to a certain degree.

I tried the Mobil 1 once and then switched to the K&N considering that I race every now and then and otherwise visit the high rpm range often enough that I want to make sure oil is getting filtered most of the time. I'll take the slight tradeoff in efficiency (and Demon's advice).
