That seriously sucked, very badly. I currently run PureOne PL-3001, big V8 filter - but it fits! I'll buy either PureOne or MotorCraft depending on which one is cheaper at the time.

It would be more accurate to say that Fram and lower level Champion do not have as good of anti drain back valves. The Motorcraft FL-820S has a silicon valve, while lesser ones have nitril rubber valves that do not respond to temperature changes as well and age poorly in use.

Fram is truly the junk filter. It is made so cheaply that it might hold together between oil changes. Besides a poor anti drain back valve it has a lousy plastic by pass valve (pressure relief valve) that I have had come apart. On top of that, the end caps are poorly made.

The lower level Champion filters are not nearly as bad. The latest design is called the encore and has had mixed reviews but seems to really be an inovative way to keep quality up and costs down. I would much rather use one of these than a Fram.

Yes the same company makes filters at both ends of the spectrum.

Their "Champ" department (at least what they were called a few years ago???) makes el-budget, cheapo filters. Just like the examples I gave. (some more: Walmart filter, Deutsch, etc)

Bosch & STP (a "Champ" too btw) make the list of poor quality filters as well.

Also for the record: Pennzoil, Quaker State (same company), and Valvoline are all FRAM filters. FRAM Sucks!

Good filter brands:
Mobil 1/K&N (same filter, different case), Motorcraft (Purolator), AC Delco, Hard Driver (not made for our car anymore), AMSOil (suspect flow rating???), Purolator, & Wix (NAPA is a Wix)

Of those I'd recommend what I always do. Motorcraft or Mobil 1/K&N.

~~~ As for you Ryan~~~
The FL-1A is definitely a Pure One as well. I don't know about the rest.
Valvoline oil filters are overpriced relabeled Purolators. It's not a bad filter, but not as good as Motorcraft or PureOne.
Pennzoil and Quaker State are indeed relabled Frams, and they are no better than the cheapest Frams.
Fram is owned by Honeywell, who also owns some good brands, namely Bendix brakes and Autolite. I'm wondering what the receintly introduced Autolite oil filters are like. I think they must be relabeled Frams. What a bring down for Autolite!
According to Champion, the innards are also different.
Case: The case burst strength is actually higher on the Mobil 1, but they are both stronger than they need to be.
Filter: The Mobil 1 scores higher for filtering efficiency, but the K&N scores higher for flow rate. It might be the same material, but the M1 has more pleats--perhaps too many? Anyway, efficiency still good for both filters, with the K&N at about 90%, and the M1 at 93-95% (going from memory, here.) Kind of splitting hairs to a certain degree.
I tried the Mobil 1 once and then switched to the K&N considering that I race every now and then and otherwise visit the high rpm range often enough that I want to make sure oil is getting filtered most of the time. I'll take the slight tradeoff in efficiency (and Demon's advice).
The FL400S is identical to the FL820S except it's SAE instead of metric. Silicon bypass valve is on threaded end, as it should be.
There are two valves in the filter. The red silicon valve is the anti drain back valve. The by pass valve is the steel "butterfly" spring and how it seats with the center core tube.
