It would be more accurate to say that Fram and lower level Champion do not have as good of anti drain back valves. The Motorcraft FL-820S has a silicon valve, while lesser ones have nitril rubber valves that do not respond to temperature changes as well and age poorly in use.

Fram is truly the junk filter. It is made so cheaply that it might hold together between oil changes. Besides a poor anti drain back valve it has a lousy plastic by pass valve (pressure relief valve) that I have had come apart. On top of that, the end caps are poorly made.

The lower level Champion filters are not nearly as bad. The latest design is called the encore and has had mixed reviews but seems to really be an inovative way to keep quality up and costs down. I would much rather use one of these than a Fram.
