1998 Contour GL Sport 2.5L V6 5 Speed 98,000Km

I was driving down the highway changing from 5th to 4th and it wouldn't go into 4th. I let the clutch out the clutch stayed on the floor. We were going uphill at about 80km/h and it was rushour so people were getting right on my ass because I was slowing down rather quickly. So I clutchless shifted into third and got off the highway. Then my friend and I managed to push and clutchless shift to a garage about three blocks away. The guy there said it wasn't the clutch it was the cylinder that does whatever it does I know nothing about cars. So it took him a damn long time to change that he finally got the part the next day didn't have time to put it in that was Saturday so he finally put it in today and I went with my dad to pick it up. The mechanic said the clutch was burnt out I didn't know how that was possible as it didn't have the slightest feel of slip before this. So I thought I could get it home get back out on the highway and it was really slipping. I was in fifth for about 20 seconds when smoke start comeing up through the steering column so my Dad and I pulled off the highway rented a dolly and pulled it home. Has anyone ever had this happen before or heard of it and how does the clutch burn out like that I have never heard of it before?

Thanks for your comments,
Mike

When he said the clutch is gone ( burnt ) What likely happened is the clutch has blown...gone from working ok to being blown apart complete failure.
