Okay, I have been searching for a used CSVT. I see all sorts of price ranges. So I decided to ask the ORG. What is a the worth/value of a used CSVT. I know there are alot of factors like miles, body work, and so on. But what would you guys recommend for me to look out for. Should I stay away from high miles on an CSVT or should that not be the biggest factor. What I really need is some advise and tips on what to look for when buying a CSVT. Thank ORG members I really do appreciate the input.

the obvious are, no rust ANYWHERE, cuz it spreads QUICKLY, not abused, no high milage, no oil leaks or any leaks, 3rd gear grind when test driving it (that can cost another $1400 to replace).
a good csvt like that can go for $5500-$7500 right now...blue book range.
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

You want one that has been well maintained and meticulously cared for. Much more so than on other cars. An owner that doesn't know this car very well can make costly mistakes that will shorten the cars life. At the same time, if you happen to find a CSVT in excellent condition, expect to pay a premium. There is a really nice on for sale here in Louisville for $8000 with 82K miles on it. I talked to the owner. He knows the ins and outs of the car (extra oil, correct trans fluid, water pump, etc.) If you can find one like that, it is worth the extra cost, IMHO.
If you are a very mechanical person, you should have no big concern about buying a higher mileage vehicle. There are many many options available to you in terms of rebuilding/swapping the engine if something goes wrong.

Yeah there is a 98 CSVT for sale on a dealers lot. It has 120,000 miles on it and he is asking $3459. I know if I get it I will start to rebuild the engine. Not that it neeeds it just cause I want to get started on fixing it.
First I have to check my funds. I was planing on trading in my 99 contour LX for it. But I know my contour is in awesome shape and I hate to part with it for a car that needs some TLC. What to do?

I would be a little suspicious and very cautious, since that's a low price for that car to be sitting on a lot. I bought my '98 SVT with 123k miles, very well maintained, from a private seller who was asking $4500, and the final price was $3350, which is just below trade-in value according to NADA. As far as I've seen, '98 CSVTs in good shape with average mileage run around $4500-5000 from a dealer, which is indeed about the retail price. If there really is nothing wrong with the car though, then go for it, as it is a good deal. Chances are you could still talk the price down a couple hundred or more. As mentioned above, the most important thing to check is the transmission. If there's any grind from 2nd-3rd, that's a rather costly issue to fix.
Generally, $4000 for '98, $5000 for '99, $6000 for 2000, with average mileage. Check NADA for more specific values, but that's approximately it, within a couple hundred dollars. I wouldn't worry too much about high mileage. After doing all the research I did before buying this car, I wasn't overly concerned about buying a car with 123k miles because people reported that the Duratecs could run the 200k mark and above without any major issues. The main thing is the transmission, though - and if it doesn't grind, that's the best sign that the car hasn't been abused. Transmission wears more quickly on the cars that are.

Sorry fowls! I just recently purchased this very car. And what a sweet ride it is. Well worth the 7,895 I financed it for. Great condition.
I found this one on autotrader. I got really lucky that i found one within so few miles from my residence.
If you want to find one in excellent condition, be prepared to pay extra in shipping costs or meet a seller out of state. It may be hard to find a good one in your area.
