I'm not a big car guy so I have a stupid question...How do I know if I have a Duratec? And If I don't have a Duratec, will the alternator be in the same location?

Your Contour V6 is a Duratec. Have you checked out the how-to yet?
And here is a nice picture. The bottom left accessory is the alternator.

I thought mine went bad,but found out later my factory battery was Dead! I started looking in there,in case mine had to be replaced. I can do alot of the do-it yourself stuff to my car. This is one of those that is a pain in the butt, for the driveway rookie mechanic. Another thing is there is the bolts are hard to reach. If you have a buddy that is pretty handy with a wrench,it can be done. Welcome and good luck!

Thank You very much guys, I checked out the awesome how-to Ray put together and I believe with some help from a friend we should get it swapped out.
Follow up question... will installing a different type of battery that came out of a Porsche damage your alternator or anything else? I was away on business in our other car when our battery died on my wife and my father in law (attempting to save money) bought or found an old Porsche battery and installed it. Started and ran for a few weeks then the battery light came on and later that day we lost all electric. Will doing this damage the alternator or more?

I would suggest that you get a battery rated for the Contour. In addition, as previously alluded to, you may want to test both the battery and alternator first before embarking on the swap.
Battery test. Engine off. Headlights on for one minute, voltage should be 12 to 12.5.
Alternator test. Engine running. Voltage should be 14 to 14.5.
Good luck.
