Alright, you guys clearly need something to do on a Saturday night but thanks for your responses.

Ran it again for ~30 seconds holding gas pedal, was able once to ease it down to an idle (rough) but next time I tried just letting off the gas and it died.

Removed plenum again - when I open the butterfly it smells strongly of solvent down there. So I wedged it open to leave for the night so the stuff has a chance to evaporate.

TOmorrow if still problems will remove and clean IAC - is there any way to test the operation of it? BTW it looks to be a royal pain to get at in the Zetec, first time I am jealous of the V6 for a maintenance job, yours looks rigth on top from the pix. Ours is under the intake manifold. I had to unbolt a fuel line bracket just to make room for 2 fingers to remove & replace the connector. Not sure if I should go at it from the top or bottom, anybody tried this?

Checked the vac lines and connectors, Tony.

Thanks guys, I'll update tomorrow.
