My EGR valve keeps tripping the CEL and meesing up my o2 sensors. The code reads insufficient flow what can i do to get rid of this problem? A new one will put a $70 hole in my pocket, which i cant afford Is it possible to cap off the EGR so it does nothing? What would become of this? IS there any possible way to clean the EGR? I tried to get it off, but if i did, i would have to replace it. Any mor options i cant think of? P.S-my contour is not an SVT, just the 24V V6 Thanks!

This should be in troubleshooting. ANd what make you come to this conclusion? Have you replaced the DPFE? What codes do you have?

Welcome. Post the exact CEL code and what year? Yes, you can clean the EGR (get new gasket first).

There you go... troubleshooting..
0401 - EGR Insufficient flow.
check the green vacuum tube going to the EGR for cracks, breaks, brittle areas (careful, you can cnap this entirely if you stress it)
Check the rubber boot on the end that plugs in to the EGR nipple.. Check for splits, tears, or pinholes.
Check for EGR operation. (Start car.. remove green vacuum tube/rubber elbow from EGR. Suck on EGR metal nipple. Car SHOULD stumble.
Check/clean the EGR ports in between the TB(Throttle Body) and the UIM. Purchase a new TB gasket for replacement (you'll need it if you remove the TB).
There are ample how-tos on the site under Duratec Maintenance, in the FAQ.

as far as the capping off the EGR, i have seen how-to's on another website, but i dont know how removing the EGR would help in getting higher MPG.

Just a note of caution about the OBD II world, don't mess with the EGR except keep it working properly. Those days of blocking EGR doesn't fly anymore, does just the opposite.
I would get a new DPFE and do a search on cleaning the EGR passages behind the throttle body gasket. Very few have ever had to replace an EGR valve itself or find very much build up. It's on the intake manifold passages. If your careful you may not need new TB gasket.
The DPFE operates in a harsh enviroment and every OBD II Ford it tends to fail, not the EGR valve. The new replacement plastic bodied DPFE has increased it's life.
Good Luck it's not tricky to get at if you remove the air box and accordian hose, but then you'll need to that to remove the TB throttle body.
Now you will be able to deal with the O2 more accurately? Cars are not cheap to keep running properly, but if done according to the hints and kinks the CEG'ers have found over the last 8-10 years you shouldn't have to waste too much.

I did the test thingy, and the car did not react to my input. i did however hear the rubber diaphragm inside the EGR move with the suction, so i know thats working.Ill just have to try and clean it on monday when i can get in the shop.if that dont work, ill try replaceing the DPFE and see if that works
