Ontario's safety and emissions tests are stupid too.
When you buy a used car, every time the vehicle changes owners, you need to have a safety inspection. it costs anywhere from $50 to $100 depending on the shop that does it,and they all check the same stuff. Lights, tires, brakes, exhaust, belts, look for leaks,no cracks in the windows, horn, wipers, rear window defrost, functional DRLs etc.
Once the car passes,it can be plated and get it's sticker.
The emissions test must also be done unless it was sold with a test already done, but is still valid. I beleive an emissions test is valid for 6 months. So,if I got my test done in January and sold the car in February, the buyer would only need to get a safety done and the e-test would still be valid, and the buyer won't need to do an e-test until that model year needs to be tested again, which is usually like every 2 or 3 years. Now if I sold that same car in August, the buyer would have to get both a safety and emission test done on the car. Emission tests here are $37.50 and a total cash grab. Anywhere in,around or near Toronto has to have one,but in places even an hour and a half north of the city, they don't need any emissions tests. You could have a brand new car and pull all emissions crap off it and run a full straight pipe and nobody would care except te MTO or OPP when they pull you over for making their eyes water and burn when you pass themm
