It's a sensor. It should pick up the difference.

I'm not sure about the measurements between the 4 and 6cyl models. Before I went off and spent money on something, I would for sure do a few searches to make sure. There are plenty of threads around, between here and fastcougar.com, to find the answers you need.
In other words, my advice is to not spend money on sumtin` before you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that it will fit.

ok well after weighing the options, I guess my best bet is to but a salvaged tranny and reman valve body complete with upgrades and fixes and a reman tc, and in the near future, a trans fluid cooler and a trans temp gauge. any further suggestions while I'm at it, money permitting?

Don't do it. It isn't worth the time and money. Get another contour that is already MTX.

Personally, if you are going to take the time to do all the work yourself, I would take the time and do all the proper pressure and dry air tests. That way, you will know for sure what is bad and what isn't and why whatever is bad.
Reason I say that is because you may not "have" to replace any of the drums or clutch packs. If you have checked the links, in my CD4E FAQ, and did not see a PDF that contained a pressure chart and how to check these pressures, let me know. I will e-mail you that article as well.
Plus, you get a CD4E from a junkyard and you are lible to have to do more work to it than you have to do to your own. Check yours out, very well and go from there.
Remember, Bt completely rebuilt his, with a cracked case and drum, for around $1500 IIRC. That's not bad!! If you were to go with an MTX, you would have to eventually have to spend that much (if TH rebuilds it) making it reliable as well, plus the price of the swap. Too much if you ask me!

I agree with the checking out the used one. I bought a used "good" one from a yard and had a good builder friend of mine tear it down just to make sure. I am very glad I did as the drum was broken, one clutch pack was burned up and the planetaries were chewed up. I had him build it with all new hard parts and the sonnax valve body and a few other goodies alng with a set of carbon kevlar or something clutches. He only charged me 975 to do all that. I cant complain a bit about it either, it shifts so nice and firm, sometimes if I let the rpms go way up it will chirp the tires when it hits second.

well the problem is that I only have one car and the tour is it. I have the use of my shop at work for the weekend that I choose to do this and I have to start on friday and finish by sunday. so that is why I think the best thing to do is buy a salvage tranny, have it pressure checked and all that then flush it 3 times and then replace the valve body and tc, that is basically the plan as of right now. and while i have the engine out I'm gonna replace my leaking rear main seal.
as for my original tranny I figured I'd get the factory service manual and start tearing it apart on my own time and completely replace everything and make sure its all right and with the best parts I can then install it at a later date.
