the main reasion i understood was that the fact of the price...and other reasons on top of that. a well equiped contour, new, while smaller, was almost the same price as a decently equiped taurus. people reluctantly bought the taurus, a bigger car for less money. there are other reasons ford killed the red headed stepchild and im sure other will chime in but this topic has been covered many times.
