Hello,

I'm planning to remove my v6 engine to replace the headgaskets. Can I remove the engine (without gearbox!) from above? Is there enough space when I remove damper, steeringpump etc.?

Thanks,

Mat

You can remove the engine and tranny together from above after everything else is diconnected. The radiator, condensor, AC compressor can all stay in the car. The only thing you have to really remove is the intake.

If you have a manual trany, it all comes out. If auto than just the motor can comes out.

I apologize. I assumed you had a manual.

O.K. thanks for the info so far. It's a manual transmission. I was hoping I could leave the trans in place! I don't understand why the engine only can be removed with a automatic?

Not enough room.

An automatic comes apart from an engine with very little movement of the trans away from the engine (probably less than an inch).

A manual trans must have the input shaft pulled out of the clutch. That could easily take about a foot.

It's easier in the end to pull it all out together regargdless of what tranny you have. This way you can have more space to pull the tranny apart from the engine. I pull them out together, set the assembly on a dolly and work on it while sitting comfortably on my rolling garage stool.

Undo the 3 bolts that hold the a/c pump to the block and zip tie to the front of the subframe out of the way, seperate ball joints, remove batt. and batt. tray, remove axle nut and pull axles after draining trans. fluid, disconnect coolant hoses after draining coolant, remove y-pipe and associated 02 plugs, VSS to wiring harness connection, plug wires and coil pack, upper and lower intake manifolds, main wiring harnesses, grounds, PS lines, clutch hydraulic line and vac. hoses. I've only done this 4 times now.
