Okay, train slowed... I was thinking I would remove the whole hub assembly WITH the axle as one unit. Then if I get a "like" assembly from the junkyard, I could just do a complete like-for-like swap. Make sense? Any reason that approach wouldn't work?

I figured it might be easier to get the axle out this way, since I'd have the hub as a "steering wheel" at the head of the axle.
