It's one thing to [censored], it's another to file a lawsuit that my city has to waste money on fighting everytime Weinbahm and his cronies get a burr in their ass.

Yeah, I do agree, throwing around lawsuits like that is not the most productive thing ever, but they are just fighting (too) hard for what they believe in, and that i can somewhat justify. Do I agree totally with them taking up a lawsuit over that? No. Do I agree with them fighting for what they believe in, sure.

Does this mean I should sue and fight HARD against EVERYTHING that offends me? Such as, pink shirts? I really hate pink shirts...

But he's not... he isn't simply "fighting for what he believes in"... he is suing for ONE thing.. and saying "I don't care" about the other (the city name... What do you like "Las Cruces" means?)

If he is REALLY against this, and TRULY "believes" in his side, why not sue for that too? Because it isn't about his core beliefs, OR taking a stand.

If you want to, more power to you, but if you did would it be right for me to start an off the wall post saying something like "Homosexual hater group led by packrat trying to get pink shirts banned..."

In the first place, there is no homosexual hate going on. Not once have I ever said I hate homosexuals, I just don't like pink shirts. Having a pink shirt doesn't make you gay in any sense of the word.

As for you starting a post like that, you probably shouldn't, because you would be perpetuating a lie. As for Packrat starting the post he did, it is a well known athiest group that is suing to have the crosses removed.

Even though they say pink is the new black, I don't even own one pink shirt... far too much of a winter color to look good on me.

ANYWAY, on topic, I believe since the name of the city has been "Las Cruces" for a very long time, I believe the crosses on the logo passes a historical test where it is indicating the name of the town and history, versus establishment of religion.

I perpetuated a lie to make a point. There are plenty of posts made with titles like "anti american [blank] does [blank]" and "baby killers blah blah" and "the liberals are destroying America by doing....". While maybe this original thread has more credibility due to the fact that it is an "athiest" group, many posts in the common intrest do not have such credibility and aim to overegaggerate and cause disputes. However I do not believe that the group is simply saying, "we are athiests and we want the crosses out". I believe it is more like "we would like to exercise our right to seperation of church and state because we feel it is being violated" regardless if it really does violate their rights at all, thats up for a judge to decide.

Why is it ok for Athiest groups to 'force' their religious beliefs upon the City of Las Cruces?

The city has been Las Cruces for the last 150 years. The cross legend dates back to the Spanish colonial period when a group of Jesuit priests were murdered by Apache raiders. The location of the bodies was supposedly marked with three crosses. Since the city was erected in the area where the attack occured, the city chose the name Las Cruces. It's impossible to verify where and when the crosses were actually erected, it was a word of mouth legend from centuries ago. When the city redesigned the logo in the 1960's, they incorporated the three crosses within a blazing sun, the sun coming from the Zia symbol on the state flag.

Why don't they ask for the Zia symbol to be removed, since it's a religious symbol of the Zia Indians. What if "I" feel "violated" by looking at some Indian symbol? Where is my protection?

Exactly.....I thought in a democracy, which is what our Republic is a form of, that majority rules! How is it that one or two people being "offended" should overrule the will of the majority? Maybe the court should rule that it should be put on the ballot as an initiative and see what the majority actually thinks? If the majority wants the crosses gone, then take them off. If not, leave them. I think everyone knows what the majority would choose if done that way. That's why these fringe, troublemaking people always go to the courts hoping to find a liberal judge who will take up their "cause".

Oh yeh, I only see two crosses anyway....
