guys (gals?)

is timing belt same as serpentine belt?

I replaced timing belts - 2 of them - on Subaru - what a nightmare!

I replaced timing chain on Dodge Ram - tedious but doable.

What about the 2.0 L4 Zetek - doable for do-it-myself-mechanic like me?
Do I have to un-bolt engine mounts?
Any free instructions on-line?

PS I dont really want to take it to the dealer cuz i dont like having them bending me over a table and doing me up right thur.....

I have 67,500 miles on my 4 banger tour and the belt is stil good. As far as more maintenance I would change the fuel filter, Plugs and wires, Transmission oil and continue your regular oil changes and filter changes. Other than that you should be good!

i will go with this as most books do not list an interval for the Contique. in fact in past discusions it was determined Ford upper the milage because so few were breaking, not to say that they don't

i changed mine at 104k to be preventative and the belt was in great shape, the problem was in the plastic pullies, the tensioner would have split in half on me had I not changed it, also they were worn pretty good, the new ones have raised sides and a low center on the face of the pully, my old ones were flat

this does not mean that you shouldn't check on the belt every so often to see how it is doing. make sure you change the pullies if you change the belt and the water pump if you feel like it since the timing belt needs to come off to get to it

JD28 did his timing belt a few months ago. He has some tricks on how to reinstall it too. Check out this link if you did not find it earlier.

Nothing. (with a qualifier. Some have said that it is possible to have the valves touch the piston just at the correct spot and bend it. But most on here say that it is not possible to do that.) A major incovenience though when it breaks. Better to change it at the recommended interval plus it will probably run better.

so you just slide the old one off and pop the new one back on? no adjusting or measuring needs done?

If you must do it yourself get the Zetec locking tool from SPX OTC 6486 it will lock cams and crank and is around 25 dollars. Also pick up a timing belt kit from rockauto for 115 it will include all timing parts belt rollers tensioner.

The Kit will include instructions on doing the job to the "T" even tq specs for each bolt. While your in there do the water pump, repair manuals help in knowing what is needed and how to do it right. Something like Haynes is a good book. Read it over before doing the job, they go for around 13 dollars and will give you an idea if the job seems too big to take on, or tools you may have to purchases. Also helps with other questions so is a good tool to have around, covers just about everything.
